Understanding Dental Filling Materials

So, what is the best material for dental fillings? Currently, there are a couple of materials in use, one of which is called composites. Composites are plastic-based materials with fillers, usually glass. This material has some issues, which I’ll explain.

• Shrinkage and Strength Limitations: Due to some of its qualities, composite material experiences shrinkage and has a certain limit to its strength. The larger the restoration, the less desirable composite is as a choice of material due to these biocompatibility issues.
• Potential Health Concerns: The plastic component of composites contains substances such as bisphenol A (BPA) and ethyl acrylate, which can cause general medical problems in the body. While these materials are accepted, from a biocompatibility viewpoint, they present some concerns regarding general health.

The Superior Choice: Ceramic Fillings

The best material on the market is ceramic for any fillings or large restorations on the teeth. Here’s why:

• Composition: Essentially, ceramic is glass. Whether we have a small, medium, or large filling, we can still use ceramic.
• Preparation and Application: We prepare the tooth, remove any decay, then scan the tooth and create the missing part from ceramic. This piece is then bonded to the tooth using techniques that are extremely strong.
• Biocompatibility: Ceramic is biocompatible as there is no plastic component, eliminating the health concerns associated with composite materials.
• Aesthetics: Ceramic restorations are aesthetically pleasing because the glass has the translucency of natural tooth enamel.

Addressing Concerns with Composite Restorations
